The Inspiration Behind Sacouvert
Discover the story of our founder, Sarah Iskarous whose passion for craftsmanship and love of Hermès bags inspired the creation of Sacouvert.
Each Couvert is carefully handmade by Sarah who invites you to join her on her journey towards timeless style, meticulous protection, and bespoke elegance.
The story of Sacouvert began with a profound appreciation for Hermès handbags and a desire to preserve their beauty for generations. Our founder, a passionate collector and connoisseur of designers, noticed a gap in the market for covers that matched the calibre of the bags they protect.
Sarah, a criminal barrister at the Bar of England and Wales, spends most of her days in front of judges and juries advocating for societies most vulnerable, however, her creative side and passion for all things luxury led her to combine her minute attention to detail with her lifelong love for fashion, luxury and creativity.
Her passion for designer luxuries started at the ripe young age of 16 when she began her collection with a Gucci bucket bag her mother got her in the Boxing Day sales. She looked after her first designer bag like it was a piece of precious gold.
Her mother, a simple woman who never herself owned designer bags, encouraged and nurtured Sarah’s love for excellent craftsmanship, the finest leathers and the chicest designs. Sarah learned, all too early, the sentiment behind luxury goods, when she lost her mother at 19 years old. Suddenly the Gucci bucket bag became more than just an opulent bag, but memories of a moment in time when life was simple and beautiful. Her desire to protect her little luxury grew.
Her quests for more and more exclusive bags and designers developed over the years, landing her at the inevitable doorstep of Hermès.
Expired wish list after expired wish list, her journey eventually found her in Paris where she was lucky enough to get her first Birkin 25 in black Togo leather with rose gold hardware. Therein began the obsession with Hermès’ fine artisanship, beautiful classic designs, and impeccable leathers.
True to her roots, she enjoyed her bags in a way Jane Birkin would approve of, but struggled with the fragility of them. Wondering how she could protect the bags she had began collecting, whilst still preserving their beauty and exclusivity, she began obsessively designing and creating covers for her own bags.
As with most Hermès handbag collectors, she often found herself frustrated at how limited her collection was and wondered how wonderful it would be if she were able to create “outfits” for her bags so they matched her ever changing styles.
When she was invited in by her wonderful sales associate to her favourite Hermès store in Harrods, London, to create her very first Hermès special order bag, she was exposed to the world of leathers, colours, stitching and skins. Shortly thereafter, Sacouvert was born.
A simple concept born out of months of measuring, studying and understanding the iconic Birkin and Kelly bags. Digging deep into the archives of her mind and dusting off her sewing machine which she had put to one side to focus on her legal career, Sarah began to design and sew again, reawakening her creative side and rediscovering her love for design and creation.
Initially making these covers for herself, Sarah began to notice a gap in the market with every curious Hermes bag owner studying the bags she wore, in most cases, not realising the Couvert was in fact not a part of the bag.
She was fortunate enough to attend the Jane Birkin auction in Paris in person. Seeing the famously well-worn Hermes creation in the flesh, she knew that many shared her sentiment that these beautiful bags were made to be lovingly worn in, but there was also a real need to protect these exclusive pieces whilst still enjoying them the way Jane intended.
Hand designing, crafting, cutting and stitching the creations herself, Sacouvert has fast become a globally desired product with designs that have no limit.
